Lashes are a MUST have. Lashes will not only finish your makeup design, they can take the design to the next level. We advise all brides to wear them, and you better believe we use them religiously on TV sets, photo-shoots and for any event we design for. Lashes are not always necessary but should you decide to use them, we want to shed some light on the subject.
There are so many different brands and types of lashes on the market that it can seem overwhelming to know what you should use. We have tried a lot of different brands but overall our team prefers the Ardell brand. You can actually hop on Ardell’s website and they have a guide on how to choose the right lashes for you. Ardell has a great selection and they are very well made. You can pick them up at any Sally’s Beauty Supply for about 4 bucks a set. For length and thickness we use the Demi-Whispies. For brides who want an all natural look, we like Babies or 110.
For adhesive, we use DUO in black but also carry the white/clear in our kits, Either works. Some artists prefer the surgical DUO adhesive. We use the regular kind and find it works just fine. If you decide to go the surgical adhesive route, just be careful because the eye is very delicate.
Tips for prepping the lash
1. Be gentle when pulling the lash from the package. Place the back of your thumb on the middle of the lash strip and gently pull towards you. Work your way around the lash strip until the lash pops off. Never tear from the outer corners, you WILL rip your lash.
2. Always measure the lash strip to your eye before applying glue. If the lash strip is too long you should always trim the outer corners. Never trim from the inner corner.
3. It will be easier to apply the lash to your eye if the lash strip has a bend to it. To create a bend, wrap it around your finger for 3 seconds.
Tips for applying the lash
1. You only need a little bit of glue. You can apply the layer directly from the glue or you can put a little bit of glue on the back of your tweezers and then pass it on to the lash strip.
2. We always put a little bit more glue on the outer corners of the lash strip. If the corners are not glued down well enough they will poke the eye and be very uncomfortable to wear.
3. The trick to applying lashes is to let the glue get tacky before placing the lash strip to your eye. Wait about 30 seconds (sing your ABC’s) that should give plenty of time for it to set.
4. If you struggle with placing a lash strip on the eye with glue already on it, there is another approach. You can use a cheap angle brush and apply glue to the brush and line your eye with glue like you would applying your eyeliner. Wait about 20 seconds and then place your lash. This may be easier for first timers.
5. When placing the lash, tilt your head back and look down. Set the lash down in the middle of your lash line, once you get that set in place move on to your outer corner and then to your inner corner. You can use tweezers or your fingers.
6. You want to press your false lashes and your real lashes together. You can use your fingers to do this or an eyelash curler. Whatever your preference.
7. Use Mascara to blend your natural and false lashes together. If your lashes are the perfect length, focus your mascara application on the roots of the lashes and only work mid way up. Taking the mascara all the way to the tips will make the lash appear longer. If you want length then take that wand all the way up to the tips.
8. We recommend to line your eye before and after your lash application. Take your eyeliner from outer corner to inner corner of the eye this will make the false lashes look more natural. You can use liquid, cake, gel or cream liner. Whatever your preference.
Tips for applying lashes on someone else.
1. Use the same techniques as listed above. Our main tip would be to have the individual look down but not close the eye. This will help you avoid gluing the eye shut.
Removing false lashes
You can use an oil base or oil free make up remover. When you remove lashes the biggest thing you want to avoid is just tearing the lashes off. The easiest way is to soak a cotton pad in makeup remover and place it over the eye. Hold it in place for 20 seconds then gently rub the eye lash until it pops off.
Hopefully this helps. If you have specific questions, be sure to leave a comment. If we can be of help, we definitely want to be.
